Savinelli Tobacco Pipe FAQ
Most modern Savinelli pipes are chambered for 6mm filters, such as Savinelli's own balsa filters, but they smoke perfectly well without one if you prefer. Older estate Savinellis vary, so check each listing for the details.
When Savinelli opened its Milan workshop in 1948, the first pipes made there carried the "Punto Oro," or "gold point," a dot inlay on top of the stem that marked them as high-quality smoking instruments. Over the decades, the Punto Oro became a designation for some of Savinelli's highest grade pipes, with only around 1% of the bowls turned at the factory having briar good enough to earn it. The Giubileo d'Oro is rarer still: in any given year, just 0.1% of the briar blocks Savinelli acquires meet its standard.
Savinelli has a special area of its campus reserved for master artisans, where non-standard shapes are carved using techniques closer to handicraft than mass production. The Autograph is the flagship series from that freehand workshop. Some Autographs are hand-turned takes on classic designs, others lean toward Danish freehands, and most sit somewhere in between, a distinctly Italian approach halfway between the English and Danish styles.
It's Savinelli's own take on the system pipe. Like Peterson's System, it has a reservoir at the base of the shank that collects moisture and prevents gurgling. It also has a stem that angles smoke upward to ease tongue burn and tongue bite, and a 6mm bore to take a balsa filter. The result is an arguably even drier smoke, which is why the Dry System has become a cult favorite among Savinelli smokers.
Every year around Christmas, Savinelli releases the Saint Nicholas, a design that's always festive but always different. For its 150th anniversary in 2026, Savinelli made a run of limited editions that tie into the company's history, including the 150th Anniversary Capri Root Briar, which brings back the pebble-dash rusticated finish that was so popular in the 1960s and 1970s. The Ottagono series also comes out in very limited releases, each with a new take on its eight-sided panel shapes.
Both. We carry new Savinellis alongside unsmoked estate and estate pipes, including discontinued lines like the Nonpareil, the Estella, and the Baronet Bruyere. There's no set schedule for new Savinellis. When we have new pipes, they go up at 9 PM Eastern, and our newsletter is the best way to see what's coming.
Yes. Ready to part with an estate Savinelli? We buy them, with cash offers of 50% of the current retail price, or 60% in store credit.
