It is probably fair to say that Savinelli is Italy’s most famous pipe brand. Founded in Milan in 1876 by Achille Savinelli, the brand has continuously offered high quality pipes for nearly 150 years. Though various Savinelli lines have come and gone over the years, the brand has always been notable for putting out classically styled pipes with a distinctly Italian twist.
The De Luxe Milano was a rather early pipe in Savinelli’s catalog, conceived during the first decades of Achille Savinelli Jr’s Milan factory. These pipes were, for the most part, very traditional, offered in smooth walnut and sandblast finishes, and marketed to the pipe connoisseurs of the day. This one is a strikingly beautiful rendition of Savinelli’s “803 KS” lumberman, and going by the straight grain patterns around its bowl, I’m a little surprised that it wasn’t bumped up to a Punto Oro grade. I do note one small fill on the shank’s underside, so perhaps that was the one last hurdle it didn’t quite cross.
The condition is good. Darkening and minor scratches on the rim, and some handling marks.
