It is probably fair to say that Savinelli is Italy’s most famous pipe brand. Founded in Milan in 1876 by Achille Savinelli, the brand has continuously offered high quality pipes for over 150 years. Though various Savinelli lines have come and gone over the years, the brand has always been notable for putting out classically styled pipes with a distinctly Italian twist.

If I remember correctly, Savinelli’s Noce (Italian for “walnut”) line was introduced around the end of the 2000s, and I’m fairly certain it is now discontinued. It belongs to a “family” of sorts within Savinelli’s historical catalog, one dedicated to natural finishes, i.e., pipes whose bowls are distinguished by their all but naked briar. In recent years, this family has included lines such as the Vigna, the Granola, and the Dune, but the precedent was set many decades ago by Savinelli’s legendary Punto Oro Corallo.

The beauty of natural finishes is their ability to “color” over time, not unlike a meerschaum pipe, with the moisture produced while they’re smoked seeping into the briar and creating a warm, golden patina. The Noce was no different in that regard, developing a brown sugar hue over the course of its faithful companionship.

The condition is good. Some inner rim charring and slight handling marks. As one can see, this particular Noce served its previous owner well, and already has a good deal of the aforementioned patina to it, so its next owner will have a head start in continuing that transformation.

Being a modern Savinelli pipe, this one is chambered to accommodate 6mm filters, such as Savinelli’s own balsa filters, if desired, though it will also perform perfectly well without one.
