It is probably fair to say that Savinelli is Italy’s most famous pipe brand. Founded in Milan in 1876 by Achille Savinelli, the brand has continuously offered high quality pipes for over 150 years. Though various Savinelli lines have come and gone over the years, the brand has always been notable for putting out classically styled pipes with a distinctly Italian twist.

Speaking of classic pipes with an Italian twist, the Ottagono series is one of the strongest examples of such within Savinelli’s catalog. It has its origins in the 1990s, with the now-discontinued, though nonetheless cult-favorite, Octavia series, which was itself distinguished by eight-sided panel shapes based on late 19th and early 20th century briars.

First debuting in the 2020s, Savinelli’s Ottagono sought to revive the core aesthetic of the Octavia while simultaneously improving on it, bringing it up to the standard of the company’s Premium models. Through a succession of distinct and extremely limited releases, the Ottagono has since become a favorite among pipe smokers, with each release offering a new take on the series’ signature motif. The Ottagono Long II, seen here, is a lengthy, paneled Dublin, dressed in a crisp, near-black sandblast and fitted with a custom-cast, craquelé acrylic mouthpiece.

Only 800 pipes in total have been made for the Ottagono Long II release, so expect stocks to be very limited.

Like most contemporary Savinelli pipes, this one has a tenon that can accommodate 6mm filters, such as Savinelli’s own balsa filters, but will also perform perfectly well without one.
