Savinelli Punto Oro Mister G 904 KS Partially Sandblasted Dublin Estate Briar Pipe, Italian Estates, 6mm

It is probably fair to say that Savinelli is Italy’s most famous pipe brand. Founded in Milan in 1876 by Achille Savinelli, the brand has continuously offered high quality pipes for nearly 150 years. Though various Savinelli lines have come and gone over the years, the brand has always been notable for putting out classically styled pipes with a distinctly Italian twist.

When Savinelli opened its Milan workshop in 1948, the first pipes made there carried the “Punto Oro,” or “gold point.” Like Dunhill and Sasieni before them, Savinelli pipes thus featured a dot inlay on the top of the stem to distinguish them as high quality smoking instruments. Over the subsequent decades, and with the release of numerous new Savinelli lines, the Punto Oro (and with it the Giubileo D’Oro) became a designation for some of Savinelli’s highest grade pipes, with only around 1% of Savinelli’s entire output earning this qualification.

The Mister G was a subset of Punto Oro pipes that debuted toward the end of the 20th century, and which was a little flashier than even a typical Punto Oro. In addition to their superior briar and finishing, Mister G pipes—named for Giancarlo Savinelli, a connoisseur for the finer things in life—included extra, decorative accents, lending a little more flair to the overall design. It’s been years since I saw a new one, however, which leads me to believe that it is no longer in production. Either that, or they only leave the Savinelli factory once in a blue moon.

This one is a superb, ring grain sandblasted rendition of Savinelli’s very modern, sharp Dublin shape, the “604 KS.”

The condition is very good. Some inner rim darkening and slight finish fading. This pipe is chambered to accommodate 6mm filters, such as Savinelli’s own balsa filters, if desired, though it will perform perfectly well without one.
