Billiard

The billiard is one of the most recognizable and influential tobacco pipe shapes. Its straightforward design has served as a foundation for countless variations and remains a standard by which many collectors evaluate a pipe maker’s sense of proportion, symmetry, and engineering.

A traditional straight billiard features an upright cylindrical bowl, a round shank, and a straight tapered or saddle mouthpiece. Bent billiards retain the same essential bowl but introduce a curved shank and stem for a different profile. Taller interpretations may approach the stack or chimney, while changes to the shank and mouthpiece give rise to related shapes such as the Canadian, Liverpool, Lovat, and Lumberman.

Although visually simple, a well-made billiard leaves little room to disguise uneven shaping or an awkward transition between bowl and shank. Factories and artisans have interpreted the form in nearly every size and finish, from compact nosewarmers to magnum pieces and from restrained English classics to more muscular Italian and Danish renditions.
