Description
Along with names like Barling, Charatan, and Dunhill Sasieni holds a special place in the history of English smoking pipes – one near to its very beginnings. So the story goes, Sasieni himself worked for Dunhill during its early days. But eventually he left Dunhill, having his own ideas about how pipes should be made, and founded Sasieni. This was 1919, and Sasieni has been the closest thing to a household name in English pipes ever since.
This is not a Sasieni shape I’ve had a chance to see up close before, and it made me realize from my other listings that I made a small mistake when talking about them. You see, I’d said before that Sasieni pipe shapes used to be named after English towns and cities. I must correct that and apologize to any Scottish frequenters of MBSD Pipes in the process: Sasieni pipe shapes used to be named after towns and cities in the UK, including Scotland, where Perth is located. Anyway, it’s a really neat shape, being a billiard with a diamond shank. I’ve also said before that the Sasieni “Rustic” rustication used to follow grain lines, sort of like modern sandblasts, which did make me wonder whether this was a straight grain block that got the Rustic treatment. As for dating, this pipe will be from the make’s post-war family era, when the Sasieni family still owned the make. That puts it somewhere between 1946-1979.
The condition is very good. Some rim darkening and light finish fading.
