Calabash

The Calabash is recognized by its flared bowl, narrowed waist, and curved profile. Many briar and meerschaum Calabash pipes reproduce this familiar silhouette as a conventional tobacco pipe, with interpretations ranging from compact bent shapes to large, dramatic designs.

The traditional gourd Calabash is a separate construction. It uses a dried calabash gourd as the body, typically fitted with a removable meerschaum cup and an internal air chamber below it. Briar pipes described as Calabashes usually imitate the exterior shape without using a gourd or the same internal arrangement. A reverse-Calabash system is also different: it refers to an expansion chamber drilled within the pipe and can be incorporated into many shapes.
