Peterson pipes generally need no introduction, but just in case you’re unfamiliar: in 1876, a Latvian named Charles Peterson immigrated to Ireland and was hired making pipes in a workshop owned by Frederick and George Kapp. After rising through the ranks to become head craftsman, Peterson bought into the Kapp’s business, which was renamed, Kapp & Peterson (K&P). During this time, Peterson himself applied for several patents for pipe designs, including the world-famous Peterson’s System. Since then, Peterson has become one of the most recognizable names in pipe smoking and continues to produce high quality pipes from their headquarters in Dublin.

Since 2009, Peterson has, alongside their Pipe of the Year (and, later, their Halloween Pipe), released an annual pipe to celebrate the Christmas season. The 2021 Christmas release was one of my personal favorites in a very long time, as it combined shapes from the Sherlock Holmes series with a dark brown (for smooth and rusticated pipes) or black finish (for sandblasts), and an engraved copper collar. The copper, for me, was what sold it, and it seems that many others felt similarly. The pipes not only sold very quickly, but Peterson also took up similar, copper mounted motifs in subsequent Christmas releases (though with very different base designs). This one is a rendition of the Sherlock Holmes “Original” shape, which was the very first in its series back in the late 1980s, though in a far different dress to anything that had come before.

This pipe is completely unsmoked, with an original bowl coating.
