Peterson Great Explorers Crean Smooth Dublin w/ Silver Estate Briar Pipe

Out of stock

Peterson pipes generally need no introduction, but just in case you’re unfamiliar: in 1876, a Latvian named Charles Peterson immigrated to Ireland and was hired making pipes in a workshop owned by Frederick and George Kapp. After rising through the ranks to become head craftsman, Peterson bought into the Kapp’s business, which was renamed, Kapp & Peterson (K&P). During this time, Peterson himself applied for several patents for pipe designs, including the world-famous Peterson’s System. Since then, Peterson has become one of the most recognizable names in pipe smoking and continues to produce high quality pipes from their headquarters in Dublin.

Many pipe companies have released limited edition pipes over the last 100 years, and Peterson is no different, from its the Pipe of the Year series, to its Christmas Pipe, and to various reissues of long-forgotten lines. Though their designs are unique to Peterson, these kinds of releases are found across the pipe industry. But there have also been several limited edition Peterson releases that are, thematically, unlike just about anything produced by the company’s rivals. And the Great Explorers series is one of them.

Released in the early 2000s, the Great Explorers was a limited run of four unique pipes, each inspired by the men who had voyaged to the Antarctic Circle in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. It was Peterson’s tribute to the “Heroic Age of Antarctic Exploration” and some of the most notable heroes of that age; Ernest Shackleton, Thomas Crean, Roald Amundsen, and Robert Falcon Scott.

This particular pipe is the “Crean,” a tall and muscular Dublin rendition. Crean was a pipe smoker and is seen smoking a Dublin shape in surviving photographs. It is also rumored that he smoked Peterson pipes, making this tribute particularly apposite.

The condition is good. Some rim darkening, slight inner rim charring, and finish fading.
