Design Berlin Potsdam Smooth Apple w/ Silver Estate Briar Pipe, Unsmoked, 9mm

Description

Design Berlin was German pipe company and was, for several decades, the number two best-selling pipe company in Germany after Vauen. Founded in 1948 as Pfeifenstudio Hartmann by Hubert Hartmann, the company adopted the name Design Berlin and the lowercase ‘db’ logo in 1975 as part of a modernization push. In 2019, Design Berlin finally closed after over 70 years in continuous operation.

Named for the German city southwest of Berlin, the Potsdam was a rather classical line from Design Berlin, one distinguished by its reddish-brown, smooth polished finish, black acrylic mouthpiece, and sterling silver collar. While I’ve labeled this one an “apple” for the sake of simplicity, the shaping is quite interesting, and one could also make the argument that it is a Belge of sorts—not unlike the early 20th century Peterson “Jap” shape, for example.

This pipe is completely unsmoked, with an original bowl coating. There’s a couple of worn out fills, though nothing major. The pipe is chambered to allow for the use of 9mm filters if desired.<>
