Oom Paul

The Oom Paul is a deeply bent tobacco pipe traditionally built around a Billiard-style bowl. Its shank and stem curve downward before bringing the mouthpiece back toward the smoker, creating the shape’s compact, full-bent profile. Many examples can be comfortably held in the mouth, although balance varies with the pipe’s size and construction.

The shape takes its name from Paul Kruger, the South African statesman affectionately known as “Oom Paul,” meaning “Uncle Paul” in Afrikaans. The design is also sometimes called a Hungarian, though naming conventions differ among brands, pipe makers, and collectors.

Oom Paul pipes range from compact interpretations to large house pipes with substantial chambers. They may be smooth, sandblasted, rusticated, or finished using multiple techniques.
