Peterson pipes generally need no introduction, but just in case you’re unfamiliar: in 1876, a Latvian named Charles Peterson immigrated to Ireland and was hired making pipes in a workshop owned by Frederick and George Kapp. After rising through the ranks to become head craftsman, Peterson bought into the Kapp’s business, which was renamed, Kapp & Peterson (K&P). During this time, Peterson himself applied for several patents for pipe designs, including the world-famous Peterson’s System. Since then, Peterson has become one of the most recognizable names in pipe smoking and continues to produce high quality pipes from their headquarters in Dublin.
Peterson’s Kildare line has been through a number different iterations across its lifetime. The line has always taken on forms from Peterson’s Classic Range but, at different points in time, Kildare pipes have been either smooth, partially rusticated, sandblasted, mounted with a nickel collar, mounted with a nickel army fitment, or some combination of the five. This particular Kildare comes from a short run in 2010, per Mark Irwin’s Peterson Pipe Notes, back when the line was distinguished by a warm, brown smooth polished dress and fitted with a vulcanite P-Lip mouthpiece.
The condition is good. Minor wear to the rim, slight finish fading, and chamber just slightly over-reamed.
