Description

Stanwell is one of Denmark’s most celebrated and enduring pipe companies, having been founded by Poul Nielsen shortly after the second world war. Over the last six decades, Stanwell has established itself as both a leader in innovative Danish design and for producing well-priced pipes with precision construction and engineering. Many of its designs were created for the company by iconic pipe-makers in the Scandinavian scene, such as Sixten Ivarsson, Anne Julie, Jess Chonowitsch, and Tom Eltang.

Though she did not design quite as many Stanwell shapes as her other Scandinavian peers, the legendary Danish artisan Anne Julie nonetheless contributed several notable designs to the make’s catalogs. As is typical of Julie’s work, her Stanwell shapes were distinguished by their organic qualities, favoring flowing curves and, most often, a definite bulbousness. This was certainly true of the “183,” seen here, which took the form of a very Danish brandy rendition (of the sort that Julie herself helped pioneer), with a tall, plump bowl sat on the end of a supple, paneled, 3/4 bent shank and mouthpiece. I’m fairly certain that the “183” is no longer in production but, either way, this one, dressed in a ruby-red finish as part of Stanwell’s Diplomat line, looks to have been made in the 1980s, or 1990s at the latest.

This pipe is completely unsmoked, with an original bowl coating.
