Savinelli Long John XL Partially Rusticated Canadian Estate Briar Pipe, Italian Estates
Out of stock
Description
It is probably fair to say that Savinelli is Italy’s most famous pipe brand. Founded in Milan in 1876 by Achille Savinelli, the brand has continuously offered high quality pipes for nearly 150 years. Though various Savinelli lines have come and gone over the years, the brand has always been notable for putting out classically styled pipes with a distinctly Italian twist.
If there’s one thing Italian pipe makers love more than stony rusticated finishes, it is—as evinced by Brebbia, Mastro de Paja, Ser Jacopo, Don Carlos, Claudio Cavicchi, and many, many others—it is extra long shank, long shank shapes. While once associated with English makes, such as Comoy’s, Dunhill, or Sasieni, extra long long shanks have been a curious staple in Italian pipe making since the early post-war decades. Savinelli’s aptly named Long John was one such example, prior to its discontinuation. With designs typically over 7 inches in length, they have typically taken the form of Canadian hybrids, sometimes with briar shank extensions to achieve their sizeable form. This one blends the Canadian with the Dublin, resulting in a unique sitter design that promises, per Savinelli’s marketing for the Long John back in the day, a “fresh, cool, and agreeable smoke.”
The condition is great. Very minor wear to the rim, but overall remarkably well preserved.
