Partial Rusticated Pipe Finish

A partially rusticated tobacco pipe combines intentionally carved or textured areas with sections that remain smooth. The rustication may cover part of the bowl, follow panels or grain patterns, surround the chamber, or create contrast between the bowl and shank.

Unlike sandblasting, which uses abrasive material to remove softer portions of the briar, rustication is created by cutting, carving, or otherwise working texture directly into the surface. Techniques range from restrained stippling to deep, craggy patterns. Partial rustication allows a pipe maker to preserve attractive smooth grain while introducing visual and tactile contrast elsewhere. It may also be used to address a localized superficial flaw without covering the entire pipe.

Because partial rustication is a finish rather than a shape, it can appear on nearly any style of tobacco pipe. MBSD’s changing inventory includes new, estate, and unsmoked estate partially rusticated pipes from factory brands and individual pipe makers.
