There are many nations in South America with vibrant pipe smoking scenes and, in recent years, these nations have produced a good number of artisan pipe makers of the highest caliber. Or, rather, it might be better to say that the internationalization of artisan pipes afforded by the internet has afforded these artisans the global recognition they rightly deserve. In any case, Brazil is among the most notable hubs for high-grade handmade pipes today, being home to Gustavo Cunha of marTelo pipes and Flavia Rodriguez, and having been the birthplace of Luiz Lavos. Of course, any mention of Brazilian pipes these days would be woefully incomplete without a mention of Emanuel de Queiroz Emiliano, better known in the pipe world as—simply—Emiliano.

There is an interesting line that runs from Danish legends, such as Hans “Former” Nielsen and Jess Chonowitsch, through South America’s artisan scene, out of which comes a pipe like this one, though it might not be the line that one expects. While Danish pipe making is known for its grain-forward designs, with artisans sculpting and polishing blocks in such a way as to capture the mesmerizing, natural patterning of briar, some of its most legendary contributors have displayed a marked fondness for rusticated finishes. Though Former has created many signature designs over the years, for example, his “signature pipe”—and the one that he himself prefers to smoke over all others—is a lightweight, rusticated apple. Similarly, the late Jess Chonowitsch also made rusticated pipes, taking his own signature apple and brandy renditions and giving them an altogether different dress. This approach made its way into the pipes of South American figures such as Luiz Lavos, who put his own spin on theme, and it has also more recently been further explored by Emanuel de Queiroz Emiliano.

Utilizing a distinctive approach to finishing that sits somewhere between that of the old Sasieni Rustic, Larrysson’s semi-figural “tree bark” works, and certain currents in Italian pipes, Emiliano’s rustication technique is thorough but measured, resulting in the rather delicate, narrow-chambered nosewarmer seen here. Weighing less than half an ounce, Emiliano’s rendition follows the Brazilian tradition of employing polished Jupati seed for its ferrule, whose gold and tan tones provide a nice contrast against the more reserved dress of the pipe’s bowl and mouthpiece.
