Poul Winslow (E) (Ekstra) Magnum Partially Rusticated Freehand Sitter with Silver and Acrylic (Estate)

As is often the case with the greats of Danish pipe-making, the story of Poul Winsløw begins as one of a master and an apprentice. That master was none other than Preben Holm; the apprentice was a young Winsløw. Holm held Winsløw in especial regard, with the latter ending up as the former’s head assistant in the Preben Holm workshop. After Holm’s untimely passing, Winsløw went solo, and after surviving the slump in the Danish pipes market in the 1980s and early 1990s, he emerged as one of Denmark’s—and the world’s—premier freehand pipe makers. After several decades crafting some of Denmark’s most popular high-grade briars, Poul Winsløw announced his retirement in 2026.

Poul Winsløw’s finest, high-grade pipes are each graded—with just a few notable exceptions—alphabetically, beginning at the “E” grade. With the “E” grade, however, there is a rare, second designation such pipes can achieve, which is awarded on the basis of their size. To put it simply, magnum-sized “E” grades receive the “Ekstra” designation, coming from a Danish word that, broadly, means “additional.” In the case of this pipe, it is possibly as close as Winsløw comes to the kinds of pipes he and his former mentor were making at the Peben Holm workshop, though with a few other design elements that are distinct to Winsløw’s aesthetic. It is a genuinely towering freehand rendition in the Danish Fancy vein, with a mixed finish that both highlights the natural patterning of the briar and lends a further ruggedness typical of the form. It is also fitted with a variety of accents as is Winsløw’s style, pairing contrasting hues of differing acrylics with a bright band of sterling silver.

The condition is great. Minor inner rim darkening. This pipe comes with its original sleeve.
