Moretti (δδδ) Partially Rusticated Pocket Magnum Bent Billiard (Estate)

The Moretti make was originally founded by Igino Moretti in 1968, in the small, but historic, Italian town of Recanati. Igino Moretti had previously been a craftsman at Hully Briar, one of the many pipe factories that had held a presence in Recanati since the 19th century. After departing Hully and taking a brief hiatus from pipe making, Igino Moretti created his own brand, Moretti Recanati, which produced pipes under its own name and as a contractor for other brands requiring high-quality Italian pipes.
In more recent decades, Moretti Recanati was inherited by Igino Moretti’s son-in law,-Marco Biagini, who later simplified the name of the brand to “Moretti.” Today, Moretti pipes are made by hand by Biagini in his workshop, which is situated just across the street from what was once the home one of Italy’s most famous writers, the Recanati Romanticist Giacomo Leopardi.

Being part of a storied Italian lineage, it’s only natural that Marco Biagini’s Moretti make would include a rusticated finish in its portfolio. Biagini’s approach to the finish is a little different to his peers, however, and in quite a refreshing way. Applying a lighter touch than the norm and typically blending rusticated and smooth finishes, Moretti pipes are closer to some of their English and Danish counterparts in many ways, with an almost “micro-rusticated” texture reminiscent of certain iconic makes. More idiosyncratic for Biagini’s work, on the other hand, are the proportions of this bent billiard rendition, being ostensibly a “pocket magnum” that combines a huge, voluminous bowl with an overall figure more conducive to being stowed in one’s jacket.

The condition is great. Perhaps a very light scratch on the rim and some very minor finish fading, but overall very well preserved. This pipe comes with its original sleeve.
