Description
It is probably fair to say that Savinelli is Italy’s most famous pipe brand. Founded in Milan in 1876 by Achille Savinelli, the brand has continuously offered high quality pipes for over 150 years. Though various Savinelli lines have come and gone over the years, the brand has always been notable for putting out classically styled pipes with a distinctly Italian twist.
Savinelli is well known for leaning into its Italian heritage, with many a line giving a nod to a famous monument, artwork, or historical figure from the make’s homeland. The Giotto is an example of such from a few years ago, and the way Savinelli chose to honor its namesake, Giotto di Bondone, is both subtle and rather clever. Di Bondone was a proto-Renaissance painter and architect, and one peculiar skill he possessed was the ability to draw perfect circles without the aid of instruments such as a compass. Savinelli’s Giotto wore a reserved, dark, smooth finish, and was accented with similarly perfect rings—one a groove cut into the top of the bowl, and the other a briar ring inlaid at the base of the mouthpiece.
This pipe is completely unsmoked. Like many modern Savinelli pipes, it is chambered to accommodate a 6mm filter, such as Savinelli’s own balsa filters, but will also perform perfectly well without one.
