Savinelli (c. 1970s) De Luxe Milano 904 KS Smooth Dublin Estate Briar Pipe, Unsmoked

Description

It is probably fair to say that Savinelli is Italy’s most famous pipe brand. Founded in Milan in 1876 by Achille Savinelli, the brand has continuously offered high quality pipes for nearly 150 years. Though various Savinelli lines have come and gone over the years, the brand has always been notable for putting out classically styled pipes with a distinctly Italian twist.

The De Luxe Milano was a rather early pipe in Savinelli’s catalog, conceived during the first decades of Achille Savinelli Jr’s Milan factory. These pipes were, for the most part, very traditional, offered in smooth walnut and sandblast finishes, and marketed to the pipe connoisseurs of the day. Where they were often slightly less traditional was in the shapes Savinelli began to produce, which included rather modern designs, like this 904 KS. Fusing elements of the Dublin, pickaxe, and opera shapes, the shape has been a staple in Savinelli’s output for a long time now—far outliving the many lines, the De Luxe Milano included, that have come and gone since its debut. As for when this one was made, I would imagine it’s from the 1970s, as it even features an original condenser tube, rather than the 6mm tenon used to incorporate the balsa filter in the decade that followed.

This pipe is completely unsmoked, with an original bowl coating. It comes with its original (slightly time-worn) box and sleeve.
