Peterson pipes generally need no introduction, but just in case you’re unfamiliar: in 1876, a Latvian named Charles Peterson immigrated to Ireland and was hired making pipes in a workshop owned by Frederick and George Kapp. After rising through the ranks to become head craftsman, Peterson bought into the Kapp’s business, which was renamed, Kapp & Peterson (K&P). During this time, Peterson himself applied for several patents for pipe designs, including the world-famous Peterson’s System. Since then, Peterson has become one of the most recognizable names in pipe smoking and continues to produce high quality pipes from their headquarters in Dublin.

The Shamrock was a Peterson sub-brand of sorts that appeared, in various guises, between the 1940s and the late 2000s. Per Irwin & Malmberg’s book, The Peterson Pipe, Shamrock were originally more affordable renditions of regular Peterson models, made for US import. This particular example comes from one of the earliest iterations of the Shamrock, having been made in the 1940s, prior to the formation of the Republic of Ireland. As can be quite plainly seen, for a sub-brand, or seconds line, the Shamrock could nonetheless make for a very beautiful pipe, with this one even wearing a light, natural finish that highlights the graining of its briar. As was typical of Shamrocks back in the day, it also wears a classy, bright nickel collar and is fitted with a P-Lip vulcanite mouthpiece.

The condition is good. Some inner rim charring, chamber slightly over-reamed, some scratches on the nickel mount, and a couple of worn out fills.
