Description
Peterson pipes generally need no introduction, but just in case you’re unfamiliar: in 1876, a Latvian named Charles Peterson immigrated to Ireland and was hired making pipes in a workshop owned by Frederick and George Kapp. After rising through the ranks to become head craftsman, Peterson bought into the Kapp’s business, which was renamed, Kapp & Peterson (K&P). During this time, Peterson himself applied for several patents for pipe designs, including the world-famous Peterson’s System. Since then, Peterson has become one of the most recognizable names in pipe smoking and continues to produce high quality pipes from their headquarters in Dublin.
Like many pipe companies in the 20th century, Peterson established its Irish Seconds sub-brand for—as one might guess—second-quality pipes, i.e., pipes that were perfectly functional but whose cosmetic imperfections meant that they would not be sold under their parent-brand. One can see, for example, that this billiard has a few flaws in the briar that have been filled with putty, though that won’t stop it from being a great smoker. Leaving this large billiard rendition in a natural finish was a nice touch too, as even with the fills, the briar is, overall, not bad at all. Based on the nomenclature and the design of the pipe, this particular Irish Seconds looks to be a 1980s make, from back when Peterson exported Irish Seconds to The Tinder Box.
This pipe is completely unsmoked.
