Peterson pipes generally need no introduction, but just in case you’re unfamiliar: in 1876, a Latvian named Charles Peterson immigrated to Ireland and was hired making pipes in a workshop owned by Frederick and George Kapp. After rising through the ranks to become head craftsman, Peterson bought into the Kapp’s business, which was renamed, Kapp & Peterson (K&P). During this time, Peterson himself applied for several patents for pipe designs, including the world-famous Peterson’s System. Since then, Peterson has become one of the most recognizable names in pipe smoking and continues to produce high quality pipes from their headquarters in Dublin.

Since 1997, Peterson has produced a special, limited edition pipe, which has come to be known as their Pipe of the Year. These pipes are released annually and are often either reissues of long lost shapes in Peterson’s portfolio, or are new shapes entirely, designed by the company’s master craftsmen. It is also often the case that these shapes are not subsequently reintroduced into Peterson’s current catalog, making them all the more exclusive to their respective annual releases.

For their 2023 Pipe of the Year, Peterson fans were treated to a limited reissue of a very special shape, the X160. The shape had originally debuted at the turn of the 20th century, being part of a series of variations on the theme of a bulbous-bowled, swan-neck bent billiard. Such shapes were very much in vogue at the time, and not just for Peterson (the famous Dunhill LC would, for example, arrive not too long after), though by the time of the 2023 re-issue, the X160 had been out of production for what appears to have been close to a century. Whether it’ll be another 100 years before Peterson brings the shape back once more is yet to be determined.

This pipe is completely unsmoked, with an original bowl coating.
