Parker pipes began life in the 1920s, as the flagship product of the Parker Pipe Co. Ltd., which was a company started by Alfred Dunhill Ltd. as a way to market second-quality pipes from the Dunhill factory. The “second” is a time-honored tradition among Anglo-French pipe companies, through which pipes that have minor cosmetic imperfections are sold through a sub-brand, rather than the company’s main brand that they were originally destined for. Given how high the standards have historically been at the great pipe factories of 20th century Europe and beyond, pipes such as Parker were essentially a way for smokers to get their hands on a well made and very reasonably priced pipe, with the only trade-off being that they were a little less flashy than their main-brand counterparts.
The Parker pipe was ultimately so well received that it became a main brand unto itself as the 20th century progressed. While Parker has remained under the ownership of Alfred Dunhill Ltd., and while its pipes have remained very affordable, they have since taken on their own, distinct lines and finishes, each rendered in the classic Anglo-French style. This one is part of Parker’s Bruyere line, which is separate from the Dunhill line of the same name, being draped in a light, grain-forward finish and accented with a ring of briar at the base of their black vulcanite mouthpieces.
This pipe is completely unsmoked, with an original bowl coating, having come to us from a new old stock lot from a store closure over in Europe. As such, it comes with its original box and sleeve.
As with most Parker pipes produced in the 21st century, this one comes with a removable stinger, which can be left in or easily taken out according to the owner’s preference without changing the pipe’s smoking properties.
