Description
Nørding was founded by Erik Nørding in the 1960s, and is one of the oldest remaining companies to come out of the Scandinavian pipe-making renaissance that began in the mid-20th century. Now in his 80s, Erik Nørding is one of the most experienced and skilled pipe-makers in the world, and over the decades he has also been a teacher of other Danish masters, such as Poul Ilsted, Svend Axel Celius, Jens Tao Nielsen, Peder Jeppesen, and Søren Erik Andersen.
In addition to his renowned Danish Fancy freehand lines, Erik Nording has always made pipes in other, similarly Danish styles, often those much closer to contemporaries like Former, or the late Jess Chonowitsch. More recently, Nording has made a few serially-produced designs in small batches, under the name of the “Limited” series. As the name implies, they’re produced in lower numbers than many other Nording pipes, typically focused on set shapes in a variety of grades and finishes. This grade B Limited, for example, is not entirely unlike the squat shapes that first appeared through Scandinavian post-war pioneer Sixten Ivarsson, and which have also been the subject of other notable renditions from artisans like Tom Eltang and the aforementioned Jess Chonowitsch. Nording’s is, I dare say, a little more “avian” in figure (in fact, it is quite reminiscent of his 2021 Hunting Pipe, whose inspiration was the ruffled grouse), seen here dressed in a dark brown contrast stain.
This pipe is completely unsmoked, with an original bowl coating.
