Nørding was founded by Erik Nørding in the 1960s, and is one of the oldest remaining companies to come out of the Scandinavian pipe-making renaissance that began in the mid-20th century. Now in his 80s, Erik Nørding is one of the most experienced and skilled pipe-makers in the world, and over the decades he has also been a teacher of other Danish masters, such as Poul Ilsted, Svend Axel Celius, Jens Tao Nielsen, Peder Jeppesen, and Søren Erik Andersen. Erik Nørding retired in 2026.
For thirty years between 1995 and 2025, Erik Nørding created a special, limited edition “Hunting Pipe,” paying tribute to the pastime and to the great outdoors more generally. The series was conceived in collaboration with Danish wildlife illustrator Mogens Andersen, with each drawing inspiration for its design for a particular animal.
For 2023, Nørding and Andersen chose the black swan, aka Cygnus atratus, as their animal of study, resulting in one of the most striking Hunting Pipes within the entire series. The color palette was essentially black and red, mirroring the swan’s body and beak respectively, and the bowl’s form was decidedly plump, just as waterfowl tend to be. Interestingly, the sandblast finish used on the bowl was deliberately of a softer sort than is usual for briar pipes, as Erik wanted to emulate the downy plumage of black swans in their adolescence.
This pipe is completely unsmoked, with an original bowl coating, and comes with its original presentation box and sleeve.
