Description
To veteran pipe smokers, Dunhill needs no introduction. Beginning in 1907, Alfred Dunhill began selling Dunhill pipes at the tobacconist shop he owned on London’s Duke Street. Very quickly, these pipes gained the reputation of being the ‘Rolls-Royce’ of pipes due to how expertly crafted they were. Today, Dunhill is likely Britain’s most famous pipe manufacturer, and continues to produce some of the most treasured pipes a smoker can buy.
Some Dunhill pipes were not intended to be sold—not immediately, anyway. This is not because the pipes were defective—far from it—but because they were intended to be gifts given by the Dunhill company to its associates and friends. In a word, these pipes were complimentary, i.e., “compliments of Alfred Dunhill Limited.” As the company itself has explained, these pipes were stamped with a large “C” not seen in other nomenclature, sometimes along with an additional “not for sale” stamp. Such was the case for this Dunhill foursquare, made in the late 1980s. Who was the pipe given to? We will likely never know. But we do know that someone, somewhere, was once the lucky recipient of a very tidy, classic Dunhill Shell Briar.
This pipe is completely unsmoked, with an original bowl coating.
