Caminetto Event 2021 Partially Rusticated Cutty Estate Briar Pipe, Unsmoked

Caminetto was, and is to this day, a decisive figure in the history of Italy’s pipe workshop tradition. After spending time developing their skills in the Castello workshop, Guiseppe Ascorti and Luigi Radice left to found their own venture, which they named, “Caminetto.” Here, Ascorti and Radice were able to create their own now-classic shapes and finishes, such as the rusticated “Business,” and the carved, wax-drip “New Dear.”

A relatively recent tradition in the workshop’s history, Caminetto’s Event series pipes are, as the name implies, special edition pieces. They are essentially the workshop’s Pipe of the Year, though these pipes are produced in far more limited numbers than their counterparts from pipe companies at home and abroad. Another interesting aspect of the Caminetto Event pipe is that each design pays homage, in some way or another, to classic shapes from the workshop’s early decades, most of which haven’t been in production since the last century. For 2021, the design chosen was a cutty—and a cutty sitter, or stander, no less—or, as the shape is called in Italian, a Genovese, or Genovesina. It’s a rather left-field design for Caminetto, and one might wonder which shape from the early Caminetto this one alludes to. Given that the Event pipes are not exact reproductions of early Caminetto pipes, but fond homages, I would imagine that the old “135” is the subject here. This one is a little more refined, though it bears the same hybridization of the cutty and Dublin shapes that the 135 did, as well as the cut of the stem and the design’s general posture. This Event 2021 rendition is dressed in Caminetto’s contemporary Business rustication and is fitted with a well-matched, engraved copper accent that complements the bowl’s golden brown finish quite marvelously.

This pipe is completely unsmoked.
