WO Larsen (c.1960s) Super 100 Copenhagen Smooth Stack Estate Briar Pipe, Danish Estates

WO Larsen was a tobacconist in Copenhagen Denmark. In the 1960s, when Danish-style pipes were becoming highly sought after, thanks to revolutionary pipe-makers such as Sixten Ivarsson, a workshop was set up on the Larsen premises to produce enough high-grade Danish pipes to meet demand. This workshop was staffed by the emerging masters of Danish pipe-making, such as Sven and Teddy Knudsen, Hans “Former” Nielsen, Jess Chonowitsch, Poul Ilsted, and Benni Jorgensen.

As with a few W.O. Larsen pipes we’ve had in recently, the “100” large, stacked billiard was an early shape in the workshop’s history, first appearing in catalogs at the beginning of the 1960s. These were the first shapes made in W.O. Larsen’s own workshop, headed the legendary Sven Knudsen and his various, soon-to-be-legendary apprentices, and they tended to be a little more classical than many of the shapes that came out of W.O. Larsen in later decades. Based on the nomenclature, this looks to be an early of the rendition of the “100,” too, having been made around the 1960s. As for the “Super,” that appears to to have been a slightly higher grade than the average W.O. Larsen, which makes sense looking at the intense flame grain patterning on this one.

The condition is good. Some inner rim charring, minor finish fading, and chamber slightly over-reamed.
