Viggo Nielsen Hand Finished Smooth Freehand Sitter Estate Briar Pipe, Unsmoked

Viggo Nielsen was one of the pioneers of the Danish style in pipe making, founding the Bari pipe company in 1948. While at Bari, Viggo, his sons Jørgen Nielsen and Kai Nielsen, and budding carvers such as Age Bogelund Åge Bogelund and Helmer Thomsen, created pipes that would help set the standard for Danish design. After leaving Bari in 1978, Viggo created pipes under his own name, as well as under the Faaborg name with his sons Jørgen and Kai.

As far as Danish freehand pipes go, it’s difficult to go wrong with one of the originators of that genre. Along with Erik Nording and Preben Holm, Viggo Nielsen was one such originator, and one of the reasons that the “Danish Fancy” freehand is recognizable by just about every pipe smoker today. This one is exemplary in that regard, showcasing exactly the kind of spectacular straight grain one would expect from someone who helped discover the ways to “chase” briar patterns and achieve such an effect. Here that’s been accomplished by way of an unconventionally narrow form, allowing as much of the briar as possible to fan out across each flank, while also being further lit up by a rich, golden contrast finish.

This pipe is completely unsmoked, with an original bowl coating.
