Stanwell (Pre-2010) Nordic Smooth Dublin with Brass and Silver (Unsmoked Estate)

Stanwell is one of Denmark’s most celebrated and enduring pipe companies, having been founded by Poul Nielsen shortly after the second world war. Over the last six decades, Stanwell has established itself as both a leader in innovative Danish design and for producing well-priced pipes with precision construction and engineering. Many of its designs were created for the company by iconic pipe-makers in the Scandinavian scene, such as Sixten Ivarsson, Anne Julie, Jess Chonowitsch, and Tom Eltang.

Stanwell’s Nordic line went through a few different guises between its introduction around the 1980s and its discontinuation in the 2000s. As for what changed with the line, one might say that it became a little more distinguished over time. Pipes from the Nordic line were always nicely grained but, over time, these grain patterns were supplemented with metal accents—first brass, then a combination of silver and brass—and the finish was lightened, giving the bowl a nice, natural sheen. This particular pipe is an example of the latter, taking the form of a beautifully grained shape “140,” which was designed for Stanwell by the late Jess Chonowitsch. Based on the nomenclature, this pipe will have been made in Stanwell’s factory in Borup, Denmark, an iconic location in Danish pipe history and the home of Stanwell’s manufacturing operations for 40 years between 1969 and 2009.

This pipe is completely unsmoked, with an original bowl coating.
