Description

Stanwell is one of Denmark’s most celebrated and enduring pipe companies, having been founded by Poul Nielsen shortly after the second world war. Over the last six decades, Stanwell has established itself as both a leader in innovative Danish design and for producing well-priced pipes with precision construction and engineering. Many of its designs were created for the company by iconic pipe-makers in the Scandinavian scene, such as Sixten Ivarsson, Anne Julie, Jess Chonowitsch, and Tom Eltang.

Stanwell’s Featherweight pipes are something of an oddity within the make’s history. They can be roughly divided into two groups: those which were made within the very first decades of Stanwell’s operation; and those which were made much more recently, in around the last two decades. Both have been termed “Featherweight,” or “Featherweights” by Stanwell, but they have been quite distinct from one another. The early Featherweights of the 1950s and 1960s were simply scaled down, or fortuitously lightweight renditions of other shapes in production at the time, with seemingly very little by way of regularity in production or proportions, and which were designated solely by their four-digit (rather than two or three) shape codes. The Featherweights of the 2000s onward, on the other hand, were both more rigid and more varied in approach. Many shapes in the new Featherweight line were created specially for it, and many were featured in it exclusively. These could be similar to existing designs, but their proportions were firmly established, especially the significant number of them designed for Stanwell by functionalist champion Tom Eltang. Some shapes, on the other hand, featured simultaneously in the Featherweight line and in other lines, with no change to the shape code used. The 107 was an example of the latter, being a slender, lightweight billiard rendition also found in several of Stanwell’s other lines, including the Bamboo and the 75th Anniversary. This one is a crisp, sandblasted rendition, with a modest burgundy stain and excellent, layered ring grain.

This pipe is completely unsmoked, with an original bowl coating.
