Stanwell (c.1995-98) Gilt Edged 193 Smooth Apple Estate Briar Pipe, Unsmoked, 9mm

Stanwell is one of Denmark’s most celebrated and enduring pipe companies, having been founded by Poul Nielsen shortly after the second world war. Over the last six decades, Stanwell has established itself as both a leader in innovative Danish design and for producing well-priced pipes with precision construction and engineering. Many of its designs were created for the company by iconic pipe-makers in the Scandinavian scene, such as Sixten Ivarsson, Anne Julie, Jess Chonowitsch, and Tom Eltang.

Debuting around the 1980s, the Gilt Edge was, for several decades, one of Stanwell’s high-end lines, though it has long since been out of production. As the name suggests, each Gilt Edged pipe was distinguished by a pair of golden mounts; one at the rim, and one at the shank end. The line was available in a variety of finishes, from a dark sandblast, to a light smooth polish, and, as in the case of this one, a black matte top-coat, giving the Gilt Edged something of a “dress pipe” aesthetic. This one is rendered in the also now-discontinued shape “193,” a distinctly Danish, long shank apple, and looks ot have been made around the mid-1990s. From around 1995-1998, Stanwell distinguished pipes that had acrylic mouthpieces (usually made for the German market) from those with ebonite mouthpieces using a small dot inlay next to the make’s “S” logo, as can be seen on this one.

This pipe is completely unsmoked, with an original bowl coating. Some slight handling marks. The pipe is chambered to accommodate 9mm filters if desired.
