Stanwell is one of Denmark’s most celebrated and enduring pipe companies, having been founded by Poul Nielsen shortly after the second world war. Over the last six decades, Stanwell has established itself as both a leader in innovative Danish design and for producing well-priced pipes with precision construction and engineering. Many of its designs were created for the company by iconic pipe-makers in the Scandinavian scene, such as Sixten Ivarsson, Anne Julie, Jess Chonowitsch, and Tom Eltang.
Though a couple of Stanwell shapes featured sterling silverware in the make’s early decades, it was not until the 1970s that a dedicated silver-mounted line was introduced, by way of the Sterling. Distinguished by thick sterling silver collars and, it seems, by bowls with exceptionally good graining, the Sterling made for a decidedly classy take on Stanwell’s iconic designs, and was marketed as such. This one might be considered something of a “dress” rendition of the classic “141” tulip billiard, designed for Stanwell by the late Jess Chonowitsch in the 1980s, and features a craggy, consistent, ring grain sandblast typical of Sterling models from the late 20th century. Based on the pipe’s vulcanite mouthpiece and silver foil inlay, this pipe will have been made between the 1980s and the late 1990s, back in Stanwell’s famous Borup factory, in southeastern Denmark.
The condition is good. Some rim darkening and finish fading.
