Stanwell (c. 1950s-60s) Reg Era Hand Made 82 Smooth Dublin Estate Briar Pipe, Unsmoked

Stanwell is one of Denmark’s most celebrated and enduring pipe companies, having been founded by Poul Nielsen shortly after the second world war. Over the last six decades, Stanwell has established itself as both a leader in innovative Danish design and for producing well-priced pipes with precision construction and engineering. Many of its designs were created for the company by iconic pipe-makers in the Scandinavian scene, such as Sixten Ivarsson, Anne Julie, Jess Chonowitsch, and Tom Eltang.

As with a few Stanwells we’ve had in recently, the “82” was one of a number of Stanwell shapes designed by Sixten Ivarsson during the 1950s and 1960s that could be referred to as “Peewit-adjacent.” While the “30,””30H,” “30L,” “35,” and “39” shapes were more clear-cut examples of Peewit renditions, other shapes, like the “48,” the “54,” the “59,” and the “84” featured hallmarks of the design while not necessarily being “true Peewits” (at least, for purists). The “82” was another shape in the latter category, swapping out the Peewit’s rounded rim for a flat cut one. In other words, it was like a cross between a Peewit and a Dublin, or even a Peewit and a Nefertiti, another shape that Ivarsson created many variations on for Stanwell in the early decades of their collaboration. As was typical of Ivarsson’s designs during this time, the “82” was a simple, yet distinctive shape, with a slender, featherweight stature and an elegance that, arguably, Stanwell’s later decades never quite matched. As the shape first appeared toward the end of the 1950s and was last seen in the 1970 catalog (being notably absent in other 1970s catlogs), I would estimate this higher-end, Hand Made “82” rendition to be a 1960s make, or very early 1970s at the latest.

This pipe is completely unsmoked, with an original (slightly time-worn) bowl coating. Some slight scratches on the bowl, though nothing major.
