Stanwell Authentic 185 Natural Smooth Brandy Estate Briar Pipe, Unsmoked, 9mm

Stanwell is one of Denmark’s most celebrated and enduring pipe companies, having been founded by Poul Nielsen shortly after the second world war. Over the last six decades, Stanwell has established itself as both a leader in innovative Danish design and for producing well-priced pipes with precision construction and engineering. Many of its designs were created for the company by iconic pipe-makers in the Scandinavian scene, such as Sixten Ivarsson, Anne Julie, Jess Chonowitsch, and Tom Eltang.

The Stanwell Authentic was a fairly recent and rather novel release from the famous Danish make. The first of its kind, the Authentic was a series of classic Stanwell shapes, distinguished by the fact that they were completely natural in finish. In other words, they were not dyed or stained, with their bowls being left more or less completely naked. They were a little like the Savinelli Punto Oro Corallo in that regard, and presumably they would, over time, develop a patina as the bowl absorbed various particles as they were continuously smoked and handled (again, like the Punto Oro Corallo). I imagine one could also use them to test out your own finishing techniques if you so desired, which is something I’ve always to try my hand at. In any case, the “Authentic” name was very much appropriate, as there are few things more authentic in the world of pipes than briar simply being briar. This particular example is rendered in Stanwell’s shape “185,” a bulbous brandy rendition thoroughly in the Danish style. As for whether the Authentic is still in production, I’m not entirely sure. I haven’t seen a new release of them in a few years, though Stanwell is not the easiest pipe brand to follow closely these days.

This pipe is completely unsmoked. It is chambered to allow for the use of 9mm filters if desired.
