Description
Over the last decade, Sean Reum has emerged as one of North America’s most admired and in-demand pipe-makers, with his fans including, among many others, the one and only G.L. Pease. Having followed Reum’s career for many years, including catching a few glimpses of the artisan in his Montana workshop, I’m happy to say that his status in the pipe world is well-earned. A master carver of hand made pipes in the Scandinavian tradition, Reum has managed to secure a niche in the highly competitive artisan market through a combination of innovative designs and production techniques, a consistent, high quality output, and an almost unparalleled work ethic.
Sean Reum does not typically make magnum-sized pipes, preferring lighter, easily clenched pieces with medium-sized chambers. He does make exceptions, however, especially when commissioned by individuals who prefer their pipes on the extra large side. This is one of those pipes and, in fact, belonged to a dearly departed friend of ours who was, in all senses, “larger than life.” It’s an especially beautiful pipe, even more so for such a large one, and I know first-hand that it was well received.
The finishing was similarly requested and praised. Much like fellow Americans Walt Cannoy and Nathan Armentrout, Sean Reum has his own, signature sandblasting technique (as well as a signature rustication techniqe). Named the “Eggshell,” Reum’s finish is a micro-sandblast of sorts, intended to produce a similar texture to the crystalline outer layer of avian eggs. The blast is often, as with this one, then subjected to a deep contrast finish, giving the bowl an especially rich texture, both for the eyes and the hands. In this instance, that sublime interplay of color was offset using an ivorite shank extension and a jet-black ebonite stem.
The condition is very good. Some minor wear to the rim, but overall well looked after. See you in the next one, friend.
