It is probably fair to say that Savinelli is Italy’s most famous pipe brand. Founded in Milan in 1876 by Achille Savinelli, the brand has continuously offered high quality pipes for nearly 150 years. Though various Savinelli lines have come and gone over the years, the brand has always been notable for putting out classically styled pipes with a distinctly Italian twist.

As used to be the tradition for many established pipe brands, the Italian Savinelli company has, for a number of years, released a limited edition pipe at Christmas time, with theirs going by the name of the “Saint Nicholas.” The design is always festive, but always different. For 2015, for example, Savinelli’s Saint Nicholas was a little more reserved than many of the more recent releases, wearing a dark, rusticated finish and having been paired with a similarly dark, black acrylic mouthpiece. Its festive-ness was instead expressed through a series of accents of alternating silver, green, red, and gold, evoking Christmas and— perhaps just as importantly—Italy itself.

This pipe is completely unsmoked, with an original bowl coating. Like most contemporary Savinelli pipes, this one has a tenon that will fit 6mm filters, such as Savinelli’s own balsa filters, but the pipe will perform just as well without a filter if preferred.
