It is probably fair to say that Savinelli is Italy’s most famous pipe brand. Founded in Milan in 1876 by Achille Savinelli, the brand has continuously offered high quality pipes for nearly 150 years. Though various Savinelli lines have come and gone over the years, the brand has always been notable for putting out classically styled pipes with a distinctly Italian twist.
Since 1985, Savinelli has produced its own take on the “pipe of the year” format, in the guise of the Collection series. These are limited edition pipes made from some of the finest briar blocks in the company’s possession, and each is a unique shape, distinct from Savinelli’s standard house designs.
For the 2000 release, the design chosen by Savinelli was that of a rather classical, flat-bottomed brandy shape, with a military style briar insert capping its shank. This is the sandblasted variant from that year, showing off an excellent, ring grain relief finish typical of Savinelli’s Collection series, and of its high-end output more generally.
The condition is very good. Some inner rim darkening and slight finish fading, but overall lightly smoked. This pipe comes with its original (slightly time-worn) presentation case and sleeve. The pipe is chambered to accommodate 6mm filters, such as Savinelli’s own balsa filters, if desired.
