Sasieni Two Dot 20 Smooth Diamond Shank Billiard Estate Briar Pipe, English Estates

Description

Along with names like Barling, Charatan, and Dunhill Sasieni holds a special place in the history of English smoking pipes – one near to its very beginnings. So the story goes, Sasieni himself worked for Dunhill during its early days. But eventually he left Dunhill, having his own ideas about how pipes should be made, and founded Sasieni. This was 1919, and Sasieni has been the closest thing to a household name in English pipes ever since.

The Sasieni Two Dot was patented in 1966 and took the place of a middle ground between Sasieni’s top-of-the-line Four Dot pipes and the many sub-brands the company had used for pipes that were high-quality, but not quite at the standard of Sasieni’s flagship product. In other words, and as described in a 1981 catalog, the Two Dot was a “worthy runner up” to the Four Dot. Based on research conducted by Sasieni historian Hal Roth, this one looks to have been made after the family era of Sasieni pipes, as it is the shape 20 “Perth” from the 1981 catalog, replacing the older 20 and Perth shapes from decades prior. Either way, it’s a very lovely, distinctive diamond shank billiard, dressed in what looks to be Sasieni’s high-end Natural finish.

The condition is great. Minor inner rim darkening, but nonetheless beautifully preserved.
