Peterson pipes generally need no introduction, but just in case you’re unfamiliar: in 1876, a Latvian named Charles Peterson immigrated to Ireland and was hired making pipes in a workshop owned by Frederick and George Kapp. After rising through the ranks to become head craftsman, Peterson bought into the Kapp’s business, which was renamed, Kapp & Peterson (K&P). During this time, Peterson himself applied for several patents for pipe designs, including the world-famous Peterson’s System. Since then, Peterson has become one of the most recognizable names in pipe smoking and continues to produce high quality pipes from their headquarters in Dublin.
The period between the early 1990s and the late 2010s, also known as the “Dublin era,” or the “Tom Palmer” era,” was an interesting one for Peterson. One significant, defining feature of the period was a rapid expansion of Peterson’s catalog, with new, novel lines added each year. Most of these lines have since been discontinued and many were not in production for all that long, so it’s nice to see one reappear every now and then on the estates market.
The Nickel Mounted Spigot was one such line, offering pipe smokers examples of Peterson’s classic spigot-mounted designs, but at a more affordable price point than he Silver Spigot series. This one is a Nickel Spigot rendition of the make’s traditional bent billiard shape, the “69,” and features a wonderfully craggy, burgundy sandblasted finish.
The condition is good. Some rim darkening and minor finish fading.
