Description
Peterson pipes generally need no introduction, but just in case you’re unfamiliar: in 1876, a Latvian named Charles Peterson immigrated to Ireland and was hired making pipes in a workshop owned by Frederick and George Kapp. After rising through the ranks to become head craftsman, Peterson bought into the Kapp’s business, which was renamed, Kapp & Peterson (K&P). During this time, Peterson himself applied for several patents for pipe designs, including the world-famous Peterson’s System. Since then, Peterson has become one of the most recognizable names in pipe smoking and continues to produce high quality pipes from their headquarters in Dublin.
In the world of pipe design, there are rusticated finishes and there are sandblasted finishes, but rarely do the two meet. Historically, there have been rusticated finishes that, intentionally or otherwise, look look sandblasted, like the Sasieni Rustic, or the Ferndown Bark; and there have been sandblasted finishes that look rusticated, like those of J.T. Cooke or Lee Von Erck. Very few pipe makers do both, in part because it requires coming up with a whole new approach to either—one that will look good and not completely destroy the briar being worked with. Some notable examples of successful rusticated and sandblasted finishes include those of the famous English craftsman Bill Taylor (of Ashton), and similarly famous American artisan Larry Roush, but the list nevertheless remains short. In 2025, the Irish make Peterson joined that list by way of the Cobble, a new, limited release line of pipes whose stummels had been both rusticated and sandblasted during their manufacture. Furthermore, rather than following established precedents for such a finish, the Cobble was completely novel, having derived its aesthetic and name from the cobbled streets of Ireland’s historic cities. Now in 2026, the Cobble has returned once more—though, like the 2025 release, it appears that numbers are limited.
The Cobble is available in a variety of Peterson’s classic catalog shapes. Please see our other listings for other shapes, Please see our other listings for other shapes, which we will be adding to throughout the coming week.
