Peterson Clontarf XL22 Partially Rusticated Dublin Estate Briar Pipe

Peterson pipes generally need no introduction, but just in case you’re unfamiliar: in 1876, a Latvian named Charles Peterson immigrated to Ireland and was hired making pipes in a workshop owned by Frederick and George Kapp. After rising through the ranks to become head craftsman, Peterson bought into the Kapp’s business, which was renamed, Kapp & Peterson (K&P). During this time, Peterson himself applied for several patents for pipe designs, including the world-famous Peterson’s System. Since then, Peterson has become one of the most recognizable names in pipe smoking and continues to produce high quality pipes from their headquarters in Dublin.

The Clontarf was a short-lived but very distinctive series of Peterson pipes released a few years back. Its two defining features were a light, minimalistic stain around the bowl, which was intended to show off the natural beauty of the briar underneath, and a darker, swirling, wire-like rusticated finish applied to the rim.

As if that wasn’t unusual enough, here we find the Clontarf rendered in one of Peterson’s already quite unusual shapes, the “XL22.” Originally released as part of Peterson’s Sherlock Holmes line, where it carries the name of the “Mycroft,” the shape occasionally features elsewhere under the “XL22.”

The condition is great, to the point where I thought it might be unsmoked, with just a slightly over-applied bowl coating at the top of the chamber. To err on the side of caution I’ll list it as smoked, but gently.
