Description

Peterson pipes generally need no introduction, but just in case you’re unfamiliar: in 1876, a Latvian named Charles Peterson immigrated to Ireland and was hired making pipes in a workshop owned by Frederick and George Kapp. After rising through the ranks to become head craftsman, Peterson bought into the Kapp’s business, which was renamed, Kapp & Peterson (K&P). During this time, Peterson himself applied for several patents for pipe designs, including the world-famous Peterson’s System. Since then, Peterson has become one of the most recognizable names in pipe smoking and continues to produce high quality pipes from their headquarters in Dublin.

In recent years, Peterson has celebrated Ireland’s historic connection to America with the Carroll of Carrollton series. These have been a more or less annual, limited edition run of pipes dedicated to Charles Carroll, an Irish-American who was one of the Founding Fathers of the United States and a Signer of its Declaration of Independence. A couple of decades prior to the inaugural Carrollton series, however, Peterson had a similar series of pipes celebrating America and its independence by way of the July 4th pipes. Released to coincide with Independence Day, which marks the adoption of the Declaration of Independence on the 4th of July, 1776, the Peterson July 4th was a small run of special pipes, each featuring engraved sterling silver mounts, and each being a non-standard Peterson shape. The 1999 release, for example, took the form of the A4, a shape that had been featured a few years earlier in the 1995 Antique Collection. Being an Antique Collection shape, however, the design can be traced all the way back to the early 1900s, as that collection was intended to resurrect very early Peterson shapes that had been out of production for many decades at that point. It’s certainly a beautiful pipe, and quite an appropriate design for the occasion.

This pipe is completely unsmoked, with an original bowl coating. Some slight handling marks, though nothing major.
