Peterson pipes generally need no introduction, but just in case you’re unfamiliar: in 1876, a Latvian named Charles Peterson immigrated to Ireland and was hired making pipes in a workshop owned by Frederick and George Kapp. After rising through the ranks to become head craftsman, Peterson bought into the Kapp’s business, which was renamed, Kapp & Peterson (K&P). During this time, Peterson himself applied for several patents for pipe designs, including the world-famous Peterson’s System. Since then, Peterson has become one of the most recognizable names in pipe smoking and continues to produce high quality pipes from their headquarters in Dublin.
Since 1997, Peterson has released an annual, limited edition “Pipe of the Year,” with these pipes typically being completely novel designs, or reissues of shapes that have long since been discontinued. For 2026, Peterson’s design team have once more revived a genuine classic from Peterson’s storied past, though one that has not made an appearance in the make’s catalog for over 50 years.
That shape is the “Cad,” a bulldog rendition that first appeared in catalogs during the early 1900s. The 2026 Pipe of the Year reissue, however, is based on a distinct—and distinctive—variation on the Cad, which first appeared around the late 1940s. This was the “493” “Large Squat Cad,” a hunched, muscular, and ever so slightly canted approach to the form.
Ultimately, the Large Squat Cad was discontinued, and spent most of the second half of the 20th century as merely a fond memory in the minds of many pipe smokers and as a “unicorn” for many a Peterson collector. Thankfully, the shape is back once more, albeit in a very limited run of just 1100 pieces, as part of Peterson’s 30th entry in the Pipe of the Year series. As was typical of the various Cad iterations, the 2026 Pipe of the Year is fitted with a vulcanite, P-Lip mouthpiece, though unlike most of the Cad iterations from yesteryear, the 2026 reissue is also fitted with a specially engraved, sterling silver collar.
