Peterson pipes generally need no introduction, but just in case you’re unfamiliar: in 1876, a Latvian named Charles Peterson immigrated to Ireland and was hired making pipes in a workshop owned by Frederick and George Kapp. After rising through the ranks to become head craftsman, Peterson bought into the Kapp’s business, which was renamed, Kapp & Peterson (K&P). During this time, Peterson himself applied for several patents for pipe designs, including the world-famous Peterson’s System. Since then, Peterson has become one of the most recognizable names in pipe smoking and continues to produce high quality pipes from their headquarters in Dublin.

Aside from the [in]famous gourd calabash, if there is one pipe, or group of pipes, most associated with Sherlock Holmes in modern times, it is Peterson’s Sherlock Holmes series. First introduced as one, special shape in 1987, coinciding with the 100-year anniversary of A Study in Scarlet, Peterson’s Sherlock Holmes ultimately developed into a whole range of special shapes, each taking its name from a character or locale within Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s detective stories. The Professor was released as part of the first expansion of the Sherlock Holmes series at the end of the 1980s, designed by Peterson’s master craftsman Paddy Larrigan, and took the form of a decidedly stout bent billiard rendition. I’m not quite sure if this one, made in 2016, is an example of the Terracotta finish, or an earlier, light brown one, but it’s certainly a beautiful pipe, with great flame grain patterns lining its bowl.

The condition is very good. Some wear to the rim and some very minor, residual oxidation on the pipe’s vulcanite stem. This pipe is chambered to allow for the use of 9mm filters if desired.
