Peterson pipes generally need no introduction, but just in case you’re unfamiliar: in 1876, a Latvian named Charles Peterson immigrated to Ireland and was hired making pipes in a workshop owned by Frederick and George Kapp. After rising through the ranks to become head craftsman, Peterson bought into the Kapp’s business, which was renamed, Kapp & Peterson (K&P). During this time, Peterson himself applied for several patents for pipe designs, including the world-famous Peterson’s System. Since then, Peterson has become one of the most recognizable names in pipe smoking and continues to produce high quality pipes from their headquarters in Dublin.

Since 1997, Peterson has produced a special, limited edition pipe, which has come to be known as their Pipe of the Year. These pipes are released annually and are often either reissues of long lost shapes in Peterson’s portfolio, or are new shapes entirely, designed by the company’s master craftsmen. It is also often the case that these shapes are not subsequently reintroduced into Peterson’s current catalog, making them all the more exclusive to their respective annual releases.

For the 2009 release, Peterson chose a stout, brandyish bent billiard, with a specially engraved silver collar and vulcanite mouthpiece, to represent another year of the make’s continued operation. While very much in the house style of Peterson’s early Oversized pieces, the 2009 shape was a new one. In the years since, it has rarely been seen in Peterson’s output, being reserved for even more limited release series, such as the James Barber Hunter and the Peterson Dublin Edition (under the name of the “B41”).

The condition is very good. Minor wear to the rim and a couple of small scratches on the bowl. The pipe is chambered to allow for the use of 9mm filters if desired.
