Peterson 2002 St. Patrick’s Day A4 Smooth Dublin w/ Nickel Estate Briar Pipe, Irish Estates

Peterson pipes generally need no introduction, but just in case you’re unfamiliar: in 1876, a Latvian named Charles Peterson immigrated to Ireland and was hired making pipes in a workshop owned by Frederick and George Kapp. After rising through the ranks to become head craftsman, Peterson bought into the Kapp’s business, which was renamed, Kapp & Peterson (K&P). During this time, Peterson himself applied for several patents for pipe designs, including the world-famous Peterson’s System. Since then, Peterson has become one of the most recognizable names in pipe smoking and continues to produce high quality pipes from their headquarters in Dublin.

It is only natural that the great Irish pipe company Peterson should honor Ireland’s patron saint, which they have done each year since 1998. These St Patrick’s Day pipes are always a limited edition make and each is distinct from the last. They are, as a consequence, collectors’ items, as well as great smokers. The 2010 release continued Peterson’s tradition of offering classic house shapes with the additional fineries of the St Patrick’s Day pipe, including a light brown, grain forward finish and specially engraved nickel collar, and it also continued the tradition of including a few extra, less standard shapes in that mix.

This particular pipe is a prime example of that. As part of the 2002 St Patrick’s release, it is dressed in a reddish brown stain, fitted with a vulcanite mouthpiece, and mounted with a specially engraved silver collar. But it is also rendered in the shape “A4,” a seldom-seen, non-standard Peterson design. Also known as the “1903,” the “A4” officially debuted in 1995, as part of Peterson’s Antique Collection, though as the name implies, this collection featured designs exclusively based on shapes from far back in the company’s history, and which had been out of production for around a century.

The condition is good. Some inner rim charring, slight scratches on the rim, and minor handling marks.
