Peterson 2000 Pipe of the Year Smooth Pot with Silver (Estate)

Peterson pipes generally need no introduction, but just in case you’re unfamiliar: in 1876, a Latvian named Charles Peterson immigrated to Ireland and was hired making pipes in a workshop owned by Frederick and George Kapp. After rising through the ranks to become head craftsman, Peterson bought into the Kapp’s business, which was renamed, Kapp & Peterson (K&P). During this time, Peterson himself applied for several patents for pipe designs, including the world-famous Peterson’s System. Since then, Peterson has become one of the most recognizable names in pipe smoking and continues to produce high quality pipes from their headquarters in Dublin.

Since 1997, Peterson has released an annual, limited edition “Pipe of the Year,” with these pipes typically being completely novel designs, or reissues of shapes that have long since been discontinued. For the year 2000, Peterson fans were in fact treated to two different POY models, both of which were new shapes within the make’s catalog.

It’s hard to decide which was the nicer pipe, and I imagine many Peterson collectors will have opted to acquire both. One was a diamond-shanked brandy with a sterling silver cap and collar; the other was also a silver-mounted, diamond-shanked design, but in the form of a bent pot with a sterling spigot mount.

The condition is very good. Minor inner rim darkening and a few small scratches around the bowl.
